Swoosh, they're gone. Sneakers sell out in a hurry

At Citrus Park, the crowds lined up at 4 a.m. to spend $150 on the limited edition Air Jordan Retro 13

St. Petersburg,FL (Jordan Zone) Early Wednesday morning, holiday shopping was all about the shoes. The black and red Nike Air Jordan Retro 13s, to be specific.

Teens, parents and even grandparents started lining up outside Westfield Shoppingtown-Citrus Park about 4 a.m. for the chance to buy the $150, limited edition sneakers that were scheduled to debut four hours later.

When the Finish Line shoe store opened, the gathering had mushroomed to about 300, general manager David Stinnett said. To keep sales manageable, people received numbered cards, and only 10 were allowed in the store at a time.

Thirteen sheriff's deputies also came out to help with crowd control.

Within an hour, the store had sold out of all but the least popular sizes. Later shipments, if any, would bring only a small number of additional pairs.

"I think that everybody who lined up early this morning got what they wanted," Stinnett said.

The scene was similar, though on a smaller scale, throughout the bay area.

Sales clerks at Foot Action in Tyrone Square Mall were greeted by about a dozen enthusiastic shoppers when they arrived for work at 7:45 a.m., manager Maria Guzman said. The store sold its 12 pairs in about five minutes.

"We still have people coming in asking for them," Guzman said. "But we don't have them."

About 35 enthusiasts waited outside the Champs Sports store in the International Plaza mall, sales clerk Kristin Wright said. Some walked away unhappy, she said, as the 18 pairs of men's shoes sold out quickly.

Kendra Repoza, a 15-year-old Alonso High School freshman, said she fully understood the allure of the shoes.

"It's the thing," said the junior varsity basketballer, who did not buy the shoes, opting instead for shirts and bracelets at Finish Line.

Her mom, Deanna, was less open to the deal.

"I would never pay $150 for a pair of sneakers," she said. "Would you?"
